DOT-Z1 Pro is a vehicle installed distance measuring instrument (DMI) offering the most complete set of operating features, while being extremely simple to use. If you are familiar with the hand wheel, you know how much easier it became to use a hand wheel versus trying to use a tape measure. This tool is the next step up and contains a lot of great features, and in my opinion is a MUST-HAVE for anyone taking distances. I had previously used Jamar and Numetrics, and couldn't believe initially how easy it was to install, that I was intially skeptical about the product. After giving it a shot and simply mounting the device on the dashboard and plugging in the power, I was delighted to see a "0" on the screen. As I started to move the vehicle, the count began increasing, and measured perfectly, without any calibration!
PROS:
1. Installation is a breeze! It literally took me 1 minute to hook up. There's simply just power and a GPS antenna that you can either place on your dash or on top (great thing is its also magnetic).
2. EASY TO USE! Ready to measure after simply turning it on.
3. Accurate, I believe this product is the first of its kind, so its had a lot of time perfecting. I found it to be accurate to AT LEAST 2 foot per mile, even on gravel roads where the other DMIs failed.
4. Much faster than any other measuring method.
5. Simple buttons to change units, stop, and clear.
6. Really neat other features such as birds view distance, which basically tells you a straight line distance from point A to point B.
7. High contrast display and great form factor. The instrument feels as though its well made and will last a while.
8. Great support if you have any questions!
9. No complicated wiring using magnets or going through the engine block. I believe the Fast Measure mentioned by the other reviewer requires installation of magnets on the drive shaft.
CONS:
1. The GPS antenna cable is lengthy if your placing the antenna simply on the dash, but you can roll up the excess cabling.
2. I haven't found a way to make it operate in silent mode, so it doesn't beep for every key you hit. Maybe its there, but I couldn't find it. I simply put a piece of scotch tape on the opening of the speaker to reduce the volume.
Overall, a great product and has saved our company lots of time. I'd recommend purchasing this to anyone who needs a foot meter.

This measure device worked alright but is to complicated and to many buttons, we tried the Fast Measure brand and found it easier to use and install then the dot-z1, it was less expensive to.

I had a cheapo chrome plumb bob for years, and found this one on sale and knew I had some layout work coming up, so I bought it, it is much easier to use and more accurate because the shape allows you to see the point more easily than the one I am going to put on a table at the garage sale, which is flat sided except for the last 3/4 inch, making it more difficult to actually look down at the point, which is the business end. Until I used a good one, didn't know there was a difference.
I don't need one all that often, but it is so pretty, makes me want to hang it up in the house somewhere, maybe on a beaded brass chain.... until I need it again.

What can you say about a measuring tape except it is good quality and easy to rewind. This does the job if you measure long distances on occasion.
